Week 3 - Bedroom Producer
Another Week down at University and everything's moving along pretty well. We have one session left in the Neve to do a mixdown on our studio project, and everyones getting started on their podcasts. So most of the University work is sort of just plodding itself along for now, not too much to report.
However this weekend i did a bit of freelance recording of a Melbourne Based singer/songwriter Named Pug. His music is heavily acoustic based/driven with raspy harsh vocals and deep lyrics. Sort of along the storyteller vein, inspired by Bob Dylan and Nick Cave types.
We setup and recorded 5 tracks worth of Acoustic, using my Shure Pg81 Pencil Condensers in XY. Then smashed out the Vocals for two of the songs on my AT2020 Omni Condenser, before we decided that was enough for the day. All in all it was a pretty successful and fun day, The acoustic raws came out sounding great, everything went smooth.
I keep kicking myself because i always forget to take photos of anything. And obviously a few snaps of our bedroom setup would of been ideal, however i did manage to take a snap to make fun of my makeshift Vocal gobo. funnily enough it did the trick and cut out some of the pingey reverb i was hearing.
All in all was a pretty fun day, i didn't personally know Pug he was a friend of a friend and we got on pretty great. He asked me to help out with the whole EP not just the recording which is sweet. The plan is for us to get some Cello, Violin and Piano on the tracks and create a really vibey acoustic based EP! Which should be heaps of fun, and having been given a bit of creative licence i'm full of ideas and getting stoked on how this old turns out!
