Glitch Hop
This Trimester at University i have been tasked with an EDM remix of a Traditional song from a a local band. In this blog i'm going to talk about what EDM genre i'm going to take a stab at!
Picking a Genre in EDM that i wholly like is very difficult for me, as i really don't listen to much electronic music, if at all. I only really know the stuff my friends who like it listen to. Theres a few artists across different electronic genres that i have liked, but i wouldn't say that i like a whole genre completely.
However my old housemate would make glitch hop tunes, and show me glitch hope artists/bands and i can safely say that while i don't unconditionally like all of it, i think it's the closest i can get to liking a whole genre of EDM.
Glitch Hop is heavily influenced by Hip Hop, and i'd say Dubstep. Most songs i've heard would be around the 100 - 110 BPM mark, and be a very funky Hip Hop inspired beat, then incorporating the bass focused dubstep and glitch noises. After a bit of research, Glitch Hop started in 1997 in Japan and UK, but really built up steam in 2001(JM,2010).
Part of what i like most about Glitch Hop is that it's very live focused, with a lot of the artists playing with live bands. Being able to watch excellent musicians do their thing on stage is 80% of what makes bands and acts stand out to me in the current state of the music industry. Below is a great live video in Melbourne of a glitch hop act, that play as a live band and absolutely kill it.
Glitch Hop is a fairly new Sub genre of EDM, and from what i've seen after doing a bit of reading up it doesn't really have too many rules to it, just funky glitches and incorporates a lot of traditional instruments. This is why i'm going to try and do my EDM remix as a glitch hop song. Having literally never made anything close to EDM, i'm skeptical if i'll get my head around it but we'll see how i go!
Hopefully with a bit of practice of Ableton and after making some sweet noises i'll have a bit more of an understanding/appreciation of electronic music! Below are two of my favourite Glitch hop tracks, enjoy!
